The Australian Antarctic Division eLearning Project

The Challenge:
After the implementation of their corporate content management system, AAD sought to address the needs for internal learning delivery.
With a large turnover of seasonal staff and the cyclical nature of Antarctic and subantarctic expeditions, the continued delivery of traditional learning required extensive commitment of AAD resources and funds.
In addition, the implementation of the Environmental Management System and subsequent compliance against ISO standards required that all staff together with expeditioners undertook an environmental awareness learning program. The target audience for the program was all Antarctic and subantarctic stakeholders that AAD has control or influence over. The ability to delivery this program by traditional means was extremely cost prohibitive.

The Solution:
By leveraging their existing content management capability, an eLearning interfaces was designed and implemented. The secure eLearning environment enables the AAD trainers to manage and track participation and communicate with learning participants.
AAD eLearning System

Byeproviding web secure delivery of learning materials, the AAD are able to engage intending expeditionary and remote Antarctic and sub-antarctic staff in the learning process.
The secure learning environment enables participants to monitor their own progress and review assessments for specified learning modules.
The facility enables the AAD to create and manage multiple eLearning modules. Participants can selected the required module and undertake the learning experience ‘at their own place, at their own pace’.
In addition, the navigation structure enables the participant to move through the modules in the specified sequence or alternatively, navigation in an order that suits their individual needs.
At the end of each topic, the participant reviews the summary and logs a notification of completion.
To assist in the assessment of the module, the participant is required to complete and online quiz. The successful assessment is based on the defined pass rate. In this example, the pass rate is 75%.

The Relationship:
The AAD eLearning project is in its infancy. Review of the initial module and user experience and feedback, will be used to evolve the solutions to meet the broader organisational needs.
In addition, the eLearning capability is be review and designed to incorporate the AAD knowledge management principles and delivery on the objectives of knowledge creation and sharing.

The following future eLearning capabilities have been identified:

        • Participant discussion facilities
        • Extended learning management to include additional staff profiling
        • Trainer or Subject Expert real-time chat capability
